Yuuki Ohta

I am a philosopher, currently looking for an academic post. Meanwhile, I teach philosophy at the University of Oxford and elsewhere, and work as the deputy director and project administrator for the ERC advanced grant project, The Roots of Responsibility: Metaphysics, Humanity, and Society (project ID: 789270), led by Professor John Hyman (UCL; The Queen’s College, Oxford). I am also a non-stipendiary lecturer at St Benet’s Hall, University of Oxford.

My CV is here (PDF; updated 31 October 2019).

I was born in 1985 in Tokyo, Japan. After graduating from a local junior high school, I went abroad to the United States, where I spent three years in a boarding school in New York, and then four years at the University of Virginia (majoring in philosophy, and minoring in religious studies). In the summer of 2008 I moved to Oxford, where I completed my postgraduate studies. Between 2015 and 2018 I was a Career Development Fellow in Philosophy at St Hugh’s College, University of Oxford.

David Foster Wallace said of fiction that it is about ‘what it is to be a fucking human being’. I think of philosophy similarly. My work in philosophy is an attempt to make sense of some of the things that human beings engage in, which make this quintessence of dust so endlessly fascinating, including: reasoning, language, art, religion, ethics, and philosophy itself.
