Richter is a painter. This is not a truism, and walking through this truly panoramic retrospective one sees the difficulty of the truth of this statement, which is not at all trivial. For more than five decades, Richter has been questioning the possibility and impossibility of the art of painting, not just by painting but also by not painting—very often, one might say, by almost failing to paint.
